Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
Stop arguing with the thought, and take a step toward what matters.

Try This
Take your worst thought, for example "I am a failure." Now say "I am having the thought that I am a failure." Then say "I notice I am having the thought that I am a failure." The thought has not changed, and you may notice a little space around it.

A Different Move
Why Tatiana Keeps This One Close
Where CBT teaches you to test a thought, ACT asks whether struggling with it is helping. It is one of the frameworks Tatiana draws on, and it fits people who are worn out from arguing with their own minds.
It also fits her interest in the nervous system. You can learn to carry an anxious sensation toward something you care about, without waiting for it to leave first.
A values conversation is not a demand to feel better before you act. You might care about being present with family, treating yourself fairly, or making room for meaningful work while still feeling uncertainty. Consider one situation where discomfort and something you value seem to pull in different directions. What would a small, realistic choice look like in your circumstances? You can bring that question to a consultation and ask how an ACT-informed approach might address it. Values are personal; they are not a checklist supplied by a website, and they do not remove practical limits or safety considerations.
You might ask how values would be explored without treating them as obligations or asking you to ignore difficult emotions. A useful example could be a choice between avoiding discomfort and doing something that matters to you, while recognizing genuine practical limits. Ask what the approach would involve and how you could discuss whether it fits. You are not expected to arrive with a finished list of values or a clear answer about what your life should become.

Six Moves ACT Teaches
- Be present with what is happening now
- Make room for hard feelings
- Step back from thoughts instead of obeying them
- Notice the part of you that observes all this
- Name what you value
- Take one committed step
Where It Can Fit
- Chronic worry that does not respond to logic
- Depression with a sense of drift
- Stress in a life that cannot change right now
- Pain, illness, or loss you cannot fix
Values and Faith
For Christians, values work can go straight to what you believe you were made for. For everyone else, it starts wherever you start.

Questions About ACT
Does acceptance mean giving up?
No. It means spending less energy fighting what is already here, so you can use it on what you can change.
Do I have to like my feelings?
No. You just have to be willing to have them on the way to something that matters.
