The Three Signs

More Than Tired

Burnout is what chronic stress does when it has no end. Researchers usually describe three signs: exhaustion, a growing cynicism or distance from your work, and a sense that nothing you do makes a difference.

It shows up in nurses, teachers, social workers, pastors, parents, and people running their own businesses. Tatiana works with people pursuing a work-life balance.

Burnout is often discussed as if the answer were simply to rest more. Your circumstances may be more complicated: a workload you cannot quickly change, responsibility for other people, financial pressure, or a role that has become tied to your identity. A useful conversation can separate what is within your control from what requires a workplace, family, or organizational change. You might begin with the point in the week when you feel most depleted and what is being asked of you then. The aim is to describe the actual demands on your life, rather than turn exhaustion into another personal performance problem.

Ask what kind of support would be relevant to your circumstances and how it differs from advice about productivity. You might want to explore a boundary, a difficult decision, or the relationship between work and other responsibilities. If you are also concerned about persistent low mood or changes in health, describe those concerns rather than assuming that burnout explains everything. A qualified assessment may be needed to understand overlapping experiences and consider appropriate options.

If You Are in a Helping Profession

Caring for others in pain has its own cost. Tatiana also offers agencies training on burnout prevention and secondary trauma, because this is rarely only an individual problem.

Questions About Burnout

Do I have to quit?

Not necessarily. Some people change how they work. Some do decide to leave, and therapy helps you make that choice clearly.

Is this the same as depression?

They overlap, and it is worth finding out. See the page on telling them apart.
