Is It Burnout or Depression?
They overlap, and it is worth finding out which one you are dealing with.

They Overlap
Why It Is Hard to Tell
Exhaustion, poor sleep, trouble concentrating, feeling hopeless about work. Both conditions can produce all of those. Burnout is not a medical diagnosis in the same way depression is. It describes what chronic workplace stress does to people, and sometimes it opens the door to depression.
A Rough Comparison
| Topic | Burnout | Depression |
|---|---|---|
| Where It Lives | Mostly tied to work or caregiving | Across your whole life |
| After Time Off | Often better, at least for a while, though it can linger | Often comes with you |
| Interests | You still enjoy things outside work | Little feels good anywhere |
| Self-Blame | "This job is draining me." | "I am the problem." |

A Caution
Why You Should Ask Anyway
Calling it burnout can feel safer than calling it depression, and it can delay care. Thyroid problems, anemia, and sleep disorders can also look similar, so see your doctor as well. If you have thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988.

Common Questions
Can I have both?
Yes. Burnout that goes on for long enough can lead to depression.
What helps burnout if I cannot quit?
Boundaries, recovery time, and honest conversations with whoever controls your workload. A clinician can help you find what is realistic.
