Why It Is So Hard

Old Roles, New Holidays

You may be forty-five years old with a mortgage and still turn into the difficult middle child within ten minutes of arriving at your mother's house. Families hand out roles early, and everyone pushes you back into yours.

Tatiana has served clients with familial conflict. You can do this work alone, even if no one else in your family will ever join you.

Family disagreements can involve expectations that were never spoken aloud. One person may see frequent contact as care, while another experiences it as pressure. A practical starting point is to name the particular situation, the relationship you want to preserve, and the limit or change you are considering. You do not have to decide that someone is entirely right or wrong to discuss the effect on you. Family roles, dependence, caregiving, culture, and safety can all shape what is realistic. Ask about the kind of support currently offered and whether the conversation would involve you individually or other family members.

You can ask how the practice distinguishes individual goals from family participation, and what options are currently available. Consider whether you want to prepare for a conversation, understand a recurring pattern, or think through a boundary. The answer may differ depending on caregiving responsibilities, financial dependence, or safety. A general suggestion about communication cannot settle those circumstances. Bring the context that matters and ask what support would be appropriate before assuming a particular format.

What People Bring

  • Parents who criticize, control, or do not call
  • A sibling who gets a pass
  • Caregiving for an aging parent, and who is doing it
  • Adult kids who pulled away
  • A faith or values split in the family

Three Kinds of Boundary

Contact"I need some space right now."You decide how long

Honoring Your Parents

Many believers worry that boundaries break the commandment to honor your parents (Exodus 20:12). Tatiana can talk through what honor does and does not require. Not everyone wants that in the room, and that is fine too.

Common Questions

Can my teen and I come together?

Ask Tatiana about family sessions when you call. Confirm current age eligibility and available services with the practice.

Should I cut my family off?

That is yours to decide. Counseling helps you decide from a clear head instead of the middle of a fight. If anyone is unsafe, tell her.
