Team Communication and Conflict Resolution

For teams who have stopped saying things to each other directly.

Signs It Is Time

You Can Tell by the Meetings

Everyone agrees in the room, and the real conversation happens in the parking lot. Two departments copy their bosses on every email. A good employee has gone quiet. Training is customized to your organization's needs, and teaching healthy communication is one of Tatiana's strengths.

A disagreement can contain several different questions at once. People may disagree about the task, about who has authority to decide, or about how they were treated during the conversation. If those questions stay mixed together, the same discussion can repeat without becoming clearer. Before requesting training, describe the pattern in observable terms: what happens in meetings, what gets left unsaid, and where follow-through breaks down. Avoid assigning motives to a colleague. A concrete example gives you a better basis for discussing the kind of communication support your team is seeking.

The Skills Teams Practice

  1. Listen First

Active listening, including how to reflect back what you heard before you respond.

  2. Say It Cleanly

Assertive communication: what happened, how it affected the work, and what you are asking for.

  3. Repair

How to go back after a meeting that went badly, and how to accept the repair.

Why It Is Harder at Work

  • There is a power difference in the room
  • People fear for their jobs
  • Old history nobody mentions
  • Different cultural norms about directness

It can also help to distinguish a request from a complaint. Saying that communication is poor names dissatisfaction; explaining what information is needed, by whom, and when makes the issue more specific. That does not mean every conflict is a simple misunderstanding. Differences in authority, workload, and responsibility may require leadership decisions outside a training session. Ask how a proposed engagement would fit your situation and where its limits would be. Do not use a group workshop to pressure someone into discussing a private grievance. Concerns involving safety, discrimination, harassment, or a formal complaint need the appropriate established process rather than an informal attempt to talk everything through.

When It Is More Than Communication

If a conflict involves harassment, discrimination, or a possible legal claim, that belongs with HR or an attorney first. Training is not an investigation.

For Faith-Based Teams

Ministry teams can work with what scripture says about going directly to one another (Matthew 18:15). Secular teams get the same skills without it.

Common Questions

Can you mediate between two employees?

Ask Tatiana about this. Training and mediation are different services, and she will tell you which fits.

Will people talk?

Practice starts with low-stakes examples. Nobody is forced into a confrontation.
