What Regulation Means
Your autonomic nervous system moves you between gears. One revs you up to deal with a threat. Another settles you down to rest, digest, and connect. Regulation is your ability to move between them.
It is one of the things Tatiana most wants clients to leave with: effective skills to understand and down-regulate their nervous system and their mental health symptoms.
How It Can Feel
| Topic | Revved Up | Shut Down | Settled |
|---|---|---|---|
| Body | Racing heart, tight chest, shallow breath | Heavy, numb, tired | Slower breath, loose shoulders |
| Mind | Scanning, racing, irritable | Foggy, blank, far away | Able to think and choose |
| With Others | Snapping, arguing | Withdrawn, quiet | Present |

Skills You Can Try
- Lengthen your exhale for a few minutes
- Name five things you can see, four you can hear
- Press your feet into the floor and notice the weight
- Step outside and move your body for ten minutes
- Tell one safe person what is going on

Why It Is a Practice
Skills practiced only in a crisis tend not to be there when you need them. Practiced on an ordinary Tuesday, they become easier to reach. Some of them will not suit you, and that is useful information too.

Questions People Ask
What if breathing exercises make me more anxious?
That happens, especially for people with trauma. Tell your clinician. There are many other ways in.
Is this the same as calming down?
Not exactly. Sometimes regulation means getting unstuck from numbness. The goal is flexibility.
