What Somatic Means

When Talking It Through Is Not Enough

Somatic means of the body. You may understand exactly why something affected you and still flinch, freeze, or lose your breath. Knowing something and feeling safe about it are not the same process.

Tatiana teaches people to understand and down-regulate their nervous systems. Somatic work is one of the ways she draws on to do that, by bringing attention to sensation, posture, breath, and movement.

Body-oriented language can mean different things in different practices. Before trying an exercise, ask what it involves, why it is being suggested, and what choices you have if it does not feel comfortable. You might be interested in noticing tension, the urge to leave a situation, or the way your attention changes under stress. Those observations can be described without deciding what they mean on your own. A website cannot establish which exercise is appropriate for your health or history. Discuss relevant concerns with a qualified clinician and clarify the actual approach rather than assuming that all somatic work follows the same process.

Questions about touch, movement, attention, accessibility, and physical comfort should be addressed directly with the practice. Do not infer a policy from the word somatic. You can ask whether an exercise is optional, what alternatives exist, and how relevant health concerns would be considered. The actual plan belongs in a conversation with a qualified professional. You do not need to demonstrate a particular bodily response or explain a sensation perfectly to ask for clarification.

In a Session

What It May Look Like

  1. Notice

You pause and describe what is happening physically. Tight throat, heavy chest, restless legs.

  2. Track

You stay with it briefly and watch whether it changes, at a pace you control.

  3. Resource

You find what helps: a posture, an image, a movement, feet on the floor.

What to Expect

Ask Tatiana what somatic work would involve and discuss your comfort, boundaries, and preferences before trying an exercise.
